Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe

MAKERERE UNIVERSITY, UGANDA

Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, a distinguished academic and administrator, holds a PhD in Architecture from Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture. Since August 2017, he has served as the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, one of Africa’s leading institutions of higher learning. Under his leadership, Makerere has undergone a significant transformation into a research-intensive, globally competitive university.

A strong advocate for research, innovation, and institutional development, Prof. Nawangwe has played a key role in strengthening partnerships with global institutions and advancing Africa’s higher education sector. He serves in leadership capacities on various international academic boards, including as Chairperson of the Alliance for African Partnerships, Vice-Chairperson of the Australia Africa Universities Network, and Council Member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

Prof. Nawangwe has been instrumental in positioning Makerere University as a hub for technological advancement. His contributions include championing the establishment of Kiira Motors Corporation, Africa’s first electric vehicle manufacturing company, in which Makerere holds a 4% stake. His efforts have driven increased investments in research, infrastructure development, and policy reforms, reinforcing Makerere’s role in addressing Africa’s developmental challenges through higher education. His leadership continues to shape the future of African academia, earning him recognition as one of the continent’s foremost education reformers.
